Winter Weather...Friend or Foe?

Looking out the window during the winter months can cause conflicting feelings for many people. Yes, the seasons are very beautiful! The glistening newly fallen snow portrays a picturesque New England scene. But, on the other hand, the ice and snow present dangerous conditions for travel whether by car or by foot. Just walking out to the mailbox or the drive way to retrieve the morning paper can be a challenge to your safety. Falls are a common cause for hospitalizations. And they are more common in the winter months! Here are a few reminders to keep you safe during this winter weather.
1. Wear shoes or boots that fit properly and have rubber soles with good tread. High heels and smooth soles can be treacherous.
2. Plan for someone to shovel the walks and use ice melt, salt, or sand on the areas that melt and refreeze causing ice conditions.
3. Decide which entrance from your home is the best one to use and be sure the railings are sturdy on all stairways.
4. If you need to go out at night, have appropriate lighting on stairs and walkways.
5. Carry a cell phone or an emergency response bracelet in case of a fall so that you can call for help immediately.
6. And last but not least, ask for assistance. A steady arm to lean on can prevent injury!
